James Spann Reassigned

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the reassignment of James Spann, Warden at Burruss Correctional Training Center (BCTC) to Warden at Lee State Prison (SP), effective September 1, 2023.  As Warden, Spann will be responsible for overseeing staff members and approximately 452 medium security male offenders at the facility.

“Spann has been a dedicated and dependable leader while upholding the GDC mission for 19 years,” said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. “We are confident that his correctional knowledge and leadership skills will benefit the staff and offenders at Lee SP.”

 

Spann began his career with the Department in 2004 as a Counselor at Autry State Prison. In 2009 he was promoted to Chief Counselor at Calhoun State Prison, and in 2015 he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment at Wilcox State Prison. In 2020, he was reassigned to Autry State Prison as Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment, and in 2021, he was promoted to Warden at BCTC, where he currently serves.

 

Spann received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Albany State University and a Master of Arts in Public Safety and Public Administration from Cappella University. He has completed the following departmental training: Basic Management Training, Advanced Management Training, Correctional Leadership Institute, National Institute of Corrections Auditors Training, Executive Basic Correctional Officer Training, and Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment Academy.
