Tarmarshe Smith Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of Tarmarshe Smith, Warden at Macon State Prison (SP), to Assistant Regional Director for the Southeast, effective July 1, 2023.  Smith will assist in the oversight of the daily operations of 16 state facilities in the Southeast Region.

“Tamarshe has proven himself, not only as a leader but also as a true advocate for the mission, vision and core values of the GDC,” said Commissioner Oliver.  “His knowledge and commitment will prove invaluable as he takes on his new role in assisting with the operations of the Southeast Region.”

Smith began his career with the GDC in 2002 as a Correctional Officer at Georgia SP. During his tenure there, he was promoted to various positions including Canine Handler, Sergeant, C.E.R.T Sergeant, Security Threat Group Investigator, Lieutenant, Tactical Squad Assistant, Tactical Squad Commander, Captain, Major and Unit Manager. In 2016, Smith was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Smith SP and in 2018, he was promoted to Warden at Calhoun SP.  In 2020, Smith was reassigned to Macon SP where he currently serves.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Leadership from Mercer University and Master of Public Safety Administration. He has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Advance Management Training, Professional Management Program, Sergeants Academy, Warden’s Pre-Command and and Security Threat Group Investigator Training. Smith has also attended the National Institute of Corrections Training and Adjunct Auditor Training.
