19 offenders and 45 family members participate in event

FORSYTH, Ga. – On October 28, Washington State Prison (SP) hosted its Inaugural Family Day for the Faith and Character Based (F&CB) Dorm. There were 19 offenders and 45 family members who participated.

“Family Day allows offenders to spend quality time with their family while also showing them what they are learning and how they are growing as individuals,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “It is a joyous event that strengthens family bonds and keeps offenders motivated for change.”

Family Day included face painting, various games, and and a catered meal. Each family member was given a gift and participated in a free raffle for artwork created by offenders in the F&CB Program. The offenders whose family could not make the event were allowed to watch movies, eat popcorn, and play games within their dorm.

The 12-month F&CB Program, implemented at Washington SP in March 2016, has a total of 104 offenders enrolled. It is designed to help strengthen the offenders’ mind, body, and spirit by allowing them be housed in an environment that promotes positive change through classes, dedication to helping others, and personal growth. The program has four three-month phases: Foundation, Discovery, Transformation, and Transition.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
